Hi there Sparksy. I think you are the first non staff member to contribute to the Clubhouse forum - welcome and thanks for kicking us off - it was nice to see Glos doing the double over you for a change - just about the only good bit of our season Angel

Glad to see the West country looking well supoorted, you think you have problems as a 30 year Bristol supporter imagaine how we feel, not sure i know what a 'double' is, i thought it was a Whisky!

Countdown to we go is 40 days, or 971 hours or 58277 minutes or 3,496,587 seconds, that doesn't sound too far away?

Been watching the Lions tour of '97 again on ESPN (channel 442 Sky) over the last few nights, last one tonight at about 9.45 great to remind us all what is all about

Count down by a further 60 seconds.....soon pass

Lets add to that a bit then.... another Glawster supporter here.... season ticket holder and all that... one of the one percent that thought Dean Ryan should stay...hopefully I'll get my way.

He's a good rugby coach. OK his man management skills may need brushing up a bit, but we don't want these players becoming molly-coddled mummy's boys like their are in kissball/wendyball (choose your favourite) do we?

13 days to go! Lion Green Tour...the big one..... can't wait! Looking forward to making new friends and making some everlasting memories....

Yes the Ryan question ............. not sure he's the complete deal - he's had a fair bit of time and resource, and huge support until recently - and never quite turned us from cinderella into giant - doesnt he overcomplicate everything? I cant understand half the guff he comes out with before or after a game but maybe I'm just tik and it really does all make sense to the players.........

In his defence, he has had four years and we have been there or thereabouts for all four years. OK, we have no silverware in the cabinet other than the 2005 European Challenge Cup and the 2003 Pilkington Cup -but there are plenty of other GP sides who haven't even got that! Everyone seems to be 'bigging up' Dai Young the Cardiff manager on the back of one EDF Cup Final tonking (of us) and a semi-final loss on peno kicks. Young has had the Cardiff region for nine years. That's one pot in nine.....

I think Ryan will prove himself in the coming years. As a side we have hit a plateau and our 'bright young things' have simply not reached their potential. People are blaming Ryan for that. There has been many postings about how he has "coached the natural talent out" of these young players. I have a minor misunderstanding with that, if talent is natural it is based on instinct and belief. No one, can coach instinct out of high level performers, be they sports stars or other.

Anyway, I guess there's a time and a place for whinging about Gloucester and this isn't it. So let's change tack a bit....

I have gone on record predicting (hoping) for a 2-1 Series win in South Africa. I think that the Lions management must target Test Matches 1 & 3. All the tests will be a tough ask for a team that has to bond within 6 weeks, but the second test with the shift in altitude will be a tougher ask. What does anyone else out there in tour land think?

The bonding as a team is vital here but Geech and co have been here beofre and hopfully will be able to get that all sorted within the first few weeks.
I agree with 1st and 3rd tests totally - the want and drive to win HAS to come from the start.
38 more sleeps!!!

I think they need to target 1st and 2nd tests. I understand the altitude factor but to approach the tests with a mindset that focusses just on 1st and 3rd will be a huge mistake. Specially as the squad are at the end of a long season. The mentality has to be to win every game, if they start talking about targetting the 3rd test then we're in trouble.

What do we think about the tour being played under the approved 'ELVs'? Will it make a huge difference??

Ok Im going to take the plunge and be the first to pick a possible 1st test XV -

15 - Byrne
14 - Moyne
13 - O'Driscoll

11 - Williams
10 - Jones
9 - Phillips
8 - Heaslip
7 - Williams
6 - Worsley
5 - O'Connell
4 - Shaw
3 - Murray
2 - Flannery
1 - Jenkins

When you say the new approved ELV's, I trust you mean with announcement that mauling is now good and even numbers in the lineout has to be adhered to?

One is a plus, Northern Hemisphere sides have perfected the art (and I do mean art) of mauling the ball to create overlaps and mismatches out in midfield by drawing in extra players.

The other maybe a minus for the Lions; presuming he plays, having to keep Joe Worlsey in the lineout and not lurking in midfield will open up the defensive frailities of O'Gara and Jones IMHO.

Anyway, the ELV's were only introduced by Australians because (i) they don't like scrummaging and (ii) they wanted more TV money down under so they had to try and make our game look like Rugby League and Aussie Rules.....

I must admit, being one of the eight fat boys in the scrum, I liked that speech as well :)

However, Martin Johnsons battle cry five minutes before the first test when he names the Springbok back row (quite possibly the hardest ever in International Rugby)... "Call out their names boys, Kruger; Venter; Teichmann...they're all having it today.." was quite motivational as well... :) :)

But McGeechan's second test pre-match in 1997 was the best ever. When he talks about the wounded Sprinbok fighting for its very existence while the Lion waits and at the right opportunity goes for the jugular...

Some of the players eyes were rolling back in their head when that was being trotted out.

Every time I hear it, I reach for my shirt and shorts! :)

What do you think everyone??

15 - Kearney - On form and to my mind a half-inch better than Lee Byrne
14 - Halfpenny - Can keep pace with Habana
13 - O'Driscoll - Should be able to keep Jean De Villiers quiet...
12 - Roberts / Flutey (Can't decide whether to play a big lump against Adey Jacobs or a quicker man)
11 - Williams - Has to start against JP Pieterson. Quick versus quicker.... tasty battle this one...
10 - Jones - Yes, ahead of RoG. O'Gara showed he doesn't like to get roughed up and the Boks would do that..
9 - Blair - Phillips has good size, but that half step before the pass worries me. Burger & Smith will be all over that
8 - Heaslip - Played well enough for Leinster but had Elsom doing a lot of work in and around for him....
7 - Williams - Has to start but might not finish.
6 - Croft (if selected) - Brings too much to the game to be left out; but Worsley if Croft doesn't travel...
5 - O'Connell
4 - Shaw - Good choice! Biggest man in squad, strong but with a Basketball players hands. Engine might not last..
3 - Murray - Spot on..
2 - Mears - Simply for the ball carrying hard yards and the offloads in the tackle
1 - Jenkins - Spot on...

I still think there are a few areas to be settled though.....

ELVs
According to Rugby World, Lions tests are going to be played under the version of ELVs used in the Northern Hemisphere in the last series of Autumn Internationals.

For my sins, and there are many, I am a faithful Glawster supporter. I have been for many, many years. I still remember the days when crowds were somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 at Glaws, now we get an average of 14,000!

I remember watching Teaguey play for Gloucester and playing against him when he turned out for his alma-mater 'Gloucester All Blues'. He took the p*ss then! I remember watching the likes of Pontypool (complete with Graham Pryce, Bobby Windsor and Charlie Faulkner in the front row) and Dai 'Hard as Nails' Bishop at scrum-half coming to town on a dark, rainy Wednesday night to play 10-man rugby at its very, very best... "Pooler, Pooler, Pooler.." ah those were the days!

So having thought about it, -67 is probably fair....Drool
